The core language taught at Bearpark Primary School is French. Our planning for Key Stage 2 is based on the Durham County Council progression of skills document, and resources cover all the components of the National Curriculum.
It is the intention in Key Stage 1 to introduce and expose children to language learning and to develop interest and curiosity through an introduction to the French language informally, through games, songs and activities, when appropriate.
In Key Stage 2, it is the intention that children will access quality teaching of French by their class teacher, providing them with the foundation for learning further languages, preparing them for Key Stage 3 and showing them the world beyond Bearpark.
We aim to provide all children with the skills, knowledge and understanding to learn a new language enabling them to develop their oracy and literacy skills and their ability to communicate for practical purposes.
Our language teaching will provide the rich experiences and opportunities for the children of Bearpark Primary to understand their own culture/s and those of others, celebrating ideas about individual identity and community and deepening their understanding of the world around them. We hope that learning another language will do a great deal to shape the children’s ideas about language learning, as well as giving them a new perspective on their own language, and a better knowledge and understanding of the cultural capital they need to succeed in life.
For Spring 2023, we have introduced Language Angels. Staff have embraced this and children enjoy their focussed learning.
We also have a new Languages Club for 2023! 15 children attend this club which is run by Miss Hutton and sixth form students from Durham Johnston.
Medium Term Plans are available on request.
