In Bearpark Primary we aim for our children to do the following 6 things:
- develop deepening knowledge and understanding about a range of religious and non-religious worldviews so that they can:
– describe and explain beliefs and theological concepts
– describe and explain some sources of authority and teachings within and across
religious and non-religious traditions
– describe and explain ways in which beliefs are expressed
– know and understand the significance and impact of beliefs and practices on
individuals, communities and societies
– connect these together into a coherent framework of beliefs and practices
2. gain and deploy deepening understanding of specialist vocabulary and terms
3. know and understand about religious diversity within the region, as well as nationally and
globally
4. know and understand how religion can be defined and what is meant by the term “religious
and non-religious worldviews” and with increasing clarity know that these worldviews are
complex, diverse and plural
5. gain and deploy skills that enable critical thinking and enquiry in relation to the material
they study
6. reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, ideas, values and beliefs with
increasing discernment
This Long Term Plan has been refreshed for 2024, with the support from JIGSAW.
Yearly Overview 2023 to 2025 Religious Education
Having achieved our Educate and Celebrate silver status, at Bearpark Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children are provided with questions that allow them to explore their own beliefs to help them belong in our diverse city of Durham. We realise that our children have limited awareness of other cultures and beliefs, therefore, we are committed to exposing children to major world religions and researching the beliefs and traditions that underpin each of them. We recognise the importance of diversity and making children more aware of different faiths, cultures and traditions from around the world and in our local area. We aim to encourage children to think and discuss their thoughts and beliefs in a supportive environment and celebrate different faiths, feelings and values.
In June 2023, we looked at a range of values, morals and themes for self growth in collective worship.
‘Singing together brings joy to everyone’ and ‘We’re all different and that’s beautiful’ are the two assemblies that you will feel, see and hear around our school.
In March 2023, our children talked to our link RE Governor, Rev. Alan.
They told him they are learning about:
- respect
- Jesus and Palm Sunday
- Islam- prayer mats
- Christianity
They recalled prior learning about:
- The Last Supper
- Judaism- Torah, Synagogue, etc.
- Different writing in the bible
- St. Cuthbert stories and love of animals- Durham Cathedral
- Sikhism- dress code and meaning
- The difference between a church and a mosque
The children told Rev. Alan that they use their prior knowledge for current learning.
These are the skills that we will teach all of our children in Bearpark Primary School:
Intent | Implementation | Impact |

Through RE, children develop their knowledge of the world faiths and their understanding and awareness of the beliefs, values and traditions of other individuals, societies, communities and cultures. | The Agreed Durham Syllabus is the basis of our curriculum. Teaching and learning should show progression across all key stages. During Key Stage 1, pupils are taught knowledge, skills and understanding through learning about Christianity and Buddhism. In Key Stage 2, pupils are taught knowledge, skills and understanding through Christianity, Hinduism and Judaism. All RE is based on knowledge and understanding of religions, critical thinking and personal reflection. | Children will achieve age related expectations in RE at the end of their cohort year. Children will retain knowledge that is relevant to RE and transfer this into their own lives. Children will have opportunities to meet people from different faiths so developing an understanding of other people’s cultures and ways of life is prominent. |
Children to develop a deeper understanding of different cultures and religions from around the world as well as the local area. | Visits from people of different faiths are actively encouraged. We utilise our close links with the local church to give the children a sense of community and belonging whilst learning about Christianity and gaining an insight with real life and relevant experience. We will celebrate diverse cultures within Durham by utilising visitors including students from Durham University who come to teach every pupil from EYFS to Year 6 about traditional Chinese culture. | Children will have a broadened understanding of the different cultures and beliefs throughout the world and in our local area. |
Class teachers will be able to monitor the impact during each unit. The subject lead for RE will see the impact of learning in children’s books and floor books throughout the school and through assessments as well as informal conversations with pupils, allowing more pupil voice within Bearpark Primary School.
