In Bearpark Primary we aim for our children to do the following 6 things:
- develop deepening knowledge and understanding about a range of religious and non-religious worldviews so that they can:
– describe and explain beliefs and theological concepts
– describe and explain some sources of authority and teachings within and across
religious and non-religious traditions
– describe and explain ways in which beliefs are expressed
– know and understand the significance and impact of beliefs and practices on
individuals, communities and societies
– connect these together into a coherent framework of beliefs and practices
2. gain and deploy deepening understanding of specialist vocabulary and terms
3. know and understand about religious diversity within the region, as well as nationally and
globally
4. know and understand how religion can be defined and what is meant by the term “religious
and non-religious worldviews” and with increasing clarity know that these worldviews are
complex, diverse and plural
5. gain and deploy skills that enable critical thinking and enquiry in relation to the material
they study
6. reflect on their own thoughts, feelings, experiences, ideas, values and beliefs with
increasing discernment

This Long Term Plan has been refreshed for 2026, with the support from JIGSAW.
Overview 25-26 Bearpark Primary School
Having achieved our Educate and Celebrate silver status, at Bearpark Primary School, we are committed to ensuring that all children are provided with questions that allow them to explore their own beliefs to help them belong in our diverse city of Durham. We realise that our children have limited awareness of other cultures and beliefs, therefore, we are committed to exposing children to major world religions and researching the beliefs and traditions that underpin each of them. We recognise the importance of diversity and making children more aware of different faiths, cultures and traditions from around the world and in our local area. We aim to encourage children to think and discuss their thoughts and beliefs in a supportive environment and celebrate different faiths, feelings and values.
Christmas Performance at the Local Church
Pupils took part in a Christmas performance at the local church, where they sang a selection of Christian songs and participated in a theatrical retelling of the Nativity. This performance was delivered in collaboration with Open the Book, a Bible Society initiative that regularly visits the school to present engaging performances based on stories from the Bible, enriching pupils’ understanding of Christian teachings.
Reverend Alan
Reverend Alan regularly visits our school to share engaging stories from the Bible and to talk with pupils about different religions. His visits provide a valuable opportunity for children to explore key teachings, reflect on moral lessons, and deepen their understanding of Christianity and other faiths in an inspiring and accessible way.
